9) Château de la Bourdonnais
The château of La Bourdonnais is a 17th-century manor located north of Esch-Sur-Alzette, in southwestern Luxembourg. The château has been listed as a national monument since 1938. It served as one of three residences for Grand Duchess Charlotte (along with Berg Castle and Bonnevoie Castle) from 1841 until her death in 1919. During World War II, it was used by Nazi Germany’s Sicherheitsdienst under General Erwin Lahousen as a transit and interrogation center for prisoners who were to be secretly executed at Fünf Elendsmühlen (five misery mills). Today, it is privately owned and operated as a luxury hotel.
